Safarova leads quarter-final lineup

It will be Lucie vs. Lucie in Friday’s quarter-finals at the National Bank Cup presented by IGA in Quebec City.

Top seeded Lucie Safarova and Lucie Hradecka won their second round matches on Thursday night at PEPS to set up all the all-Czech encounter. Hradecka came from 3-5 down in the third set to defeat Canadian star Bianca Andreescu 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

“The third set was obviously a battle, I tried my best, I had a couple of opportunities at 3-1 and 5-3 serving. It’s a learning process for me and I’m not too disappointed about how I played, I’m just going to move on to the next one,” Andreescu said after the match.

For part, Safarova continued to impress, this time with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over another rising star, American Sofia Kenin. Safarova went down a break in the second set, but quickly got back on serve and won the final four games of the match.

The other quarter-finals will see American Sachia Vickery take on fourth-seeded German Tatjana Maria, Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium play American qualifier Caroline Dolehide and Montreal’s Françoise Abanda face third-seeded Timea Babos of Hungary in Friday’s evening match at 7:15 p.m..
