It’s no wonder Lucie Safarova enjoys visiting Quebec, she feels right at home here in our hockey crazy province as a big fan of the sport herself.
Last night, she had her good friend Tomas Plekanec in the stands to watch her opening match at the National Bank Cup presented by IGA. The Czech pair have known eachother for a few years and the Habs star has visited the U.S. Open twice to watch Safarova play.
“I’ve known her for a few years, I we went to the U.S. Open to watch her a few years ago and actually last week too, its fun to watch her play. Obviously there’s a hockey season so we’re not able to go everywhere and the U.S. Open is usually just before our season starts so I’ve been able to go twice,” Plekanec said.
“I love tennis, it’s a great atmosphere to walk around with all the fans, to be part of it. I play during the summer, it’s part of my training, but I am far from being good,” Plekanec joked.
For her part, Safarova watches games when she can while she’s home in the Czech Republic where hockey is almost as popular as here. But, the former world no. 5 and Roland-Garros finalist has yet to experience a game at the Bell Centre.
“When we play in Montreal, it’s always summer so there’s no hockey. Hopefully we can work something out one of these days,” Safarova said.
The media let Safarova know that the Canadiens will be playing an exhibition game at the Videotron Centre on Monday, so after she wins the tournament on Sunday, she could stay an extra day to finally watch a game!
